STart on Broadway—Seattle, Washington

The STart program was formed by Sound Transit in King County, Washington to manage the 1% of their construction costs that are allocated for art.  While most of their projects are more permanent station area public art installations, STart on Broadway focused on temporarily filling the vacant storefronts of properties purchased for station sites in the time between property acquisition and development.  STart on Broadway recruited and paid local artists to create temporarily installations in the shop windows and on unoccupied buildings.  Located on two blocks of a busy commercial strip, the installations kept the storefronts and buildings active, preventing the otherwise unused properties from becoming a blight on the neighborhood.
